Typically I’ll write some ideas down before I create a post. This is not one of those times.
As the featured image suggests, I’ve been nominated for a Sunshine Blogger Award. I’m happy to report—after quickly researching exactly what a Sunshine Blogger Award is—that i’m honored to receive it. Many thanks to Dalton over at Off The Field Gaming for the kind words. The never-ending battle for time to write and post consistently is a battle we share and may never win. I took a read through Dalton’s nomination post and one thing we have in common (besides blogging of course) are the challenges of finding the time to do it.
These awards are valuable not only as a way to blog more often, but to discover new and interesting blogs (of which I’ve found many) and stimulate conversations within a vibrant community. So much of my approach to blogging has been building off the collective mind share of all of you fine people. In the process it’s also pushed me to play more games and watch more things. Not on my PS3 though, that recently exploded.
Without going into too much detail—because Dalton asked 11 questions—I beat A Way Out with a friend the other night. It turns out video games that place you in a ‘break out of prison’ scenario are pretty good. Beyond that I’m typing this while watching The Last Jedi and I’m astonished I’ve made this much progress in this post.
So if only because I want to get back to watching this movie, let’s get onto Dalton’s questions. Thanks again for the shout out man!
Q: What is your first video game memory?
A: It’s tough to remember the exact timing of the two but either JezzBall on the Apple IIe or Street Fighter 2 arcade. We used to winter vacation in New Hampshire growing up and I remember walking up to the arcade machine at the local (and only) pizza shop and being floored by its presence. Many quarters were shoved into that machine and many palms chafed. Also kudos to that pizza place for cornering the Cheshire county pizza market.
Q: If you’re a console player, which console generation so far has been your favorite?
A: Playstation 2. 13 years of releasing games for that system and by far the best library of games (and really damn good ones, too).
Q: Who is your all-time favorite sidekick?
A: Captain Jack Harkness.
Q: Batman vs. Superman who wins?
A: I’d imagine it would go something like fight, fight, fight, “Martha” and then they team up or something.
Q: When did you first decide you wanted to write/blog?
A: I had been a reporter for a bit after graduating college. Some local stuff and then some live music stuff. A few years ago I found my old notepad where I used to write little notes about games and movies I was watching. It seemed natural to start to share some of that stuff and better document it.
Q: If you could live in any video game universe, which one would you choose?
A: Probably Fruit Ninja. It would force me to eat fruit.
Q: If you could have any movie turned into a video game, which movie and why?
A: Bloodsport. Mostly for reasons I should over-analyze in its’ own post. Bloodsport holds a very special place in my heart.
Q: Where in the world is Carmen San Diego?
A: Last I heard she hopped on Widespread Panic tour.
Q: How many hours did you spend on your longest marathon gaming session?
A: This would probably date back to 7th grade and WCW/NWO Revenge on the N64. Surprisingly we played more Perfect Dark than Goldeneye back then but the marathons really came from Revenge and Perfect Dark binges. If I had to put a number on a stand-out Revenge marathon I’d peg it at around 10 hours.
Q: When is the best time of day to play video games?
A: For me it’s whenever I have time, but weekend mornings are typically always the best for me.
Q: How long is your perfect gaming session?
A: This is a difficult question to answer.
Thanks again to Dalton for the shout out, and for the questions. I probably wouldn’t have dug up that Street Fighter 2 memory if it wasn’t for this. Also I think my ‘get rich quick’ plan has finally hatched as a result of this; pizza delivery in underserved counties in New Hampshire.
